2017 BWPI Summer Competition underway
Published Thu 28 Sep 2017
Making waves last weekend, the junior and senior summer BWPI competitions commenced for the 2017/18 season. Spread across six venues, Round One saw a monstrous two hundred and twenty-three teams make a splash across twenty-seven competition divisions.
This season we welcome returning coaches, referees, and players in addition to new members to the water polo community.
Diving straight into the new season, the 12A/B/C divisions saw new players jumping into the pool for the first Summer Season with some great results. Mermaids started the season strong and whilst it was a tough game from Brisbane Girls Grammar School, they remain a strong contender for the rest of the season.
BGGS has a long history of producing successful players and this weekend could be the start of a long water polo career for a girl comparable to Grammar Old Girls, Gabi Palm, Ellodie Ruffin or possibly Debbie Handley Cummins.
While some started their journey with water polo last weekend, others returned to join the Opens competition.
Ex-National League Captain for the Brisbane Barracudas, Anna Broome joined the Barracudas side once again to help improve the skills of younger teammates. With four NWPL wins and six years’ experience playing on the New Zealand National team, this left-hander is no doubt a fantastic attribute and role model for younger players.
With an abundance of current and past national league players partaking in the opens and senior competitions, this season will certainly be jam-packed with tremendously entertaining games and intense matches across all venues.
As the competition continues to grow, we remind players to respect each other both in and out of the pool. Our sport is for everyone and we welcome all who are involved. Congratulations to all who were successful in Round One, and good luck to everyone for the coming rounds.
