Brisbane Tritons head to Perth for inaugural Perth Pride Challenge.
The event, held at Beatty Park Leisure Centre in Perth saw all 4 LGBTIQ+ water polo clubs in Australia, Brisbane Tritons, Perth White Pointers, Sydney Stingers and Melbourne Surge come together for a day of inclusivity, fun and water polo on the west coast.
With over 100 players participating, Queensland was represented by the Brisbane Tritons. The club, who originally formed in 2015 from a joint initiative of the Sydney Stingers, Melbourne Surge, and Brisbane Barracudas is Queensland's first and only LGBTIQ-inclusive water polo club.
The Pride Perth Challenge which follows on from the event held in Brisbane last year was won by the Sydney Stingers although was less about the competition and more building social connections.
Tritons club president Sean Langeveld spoke about the event saying
"It's a special chance for all the 4 clubs to get together to showcase the inclusion and diversity in water polo."
"It was great to see it picked up again and done so successfully, Perth did a great job of getting people over to the west."
"We sent two teams and although we didn't make the finals we played our hearts out and had a great time."
The tournament brought together a broad spectrum of members from the LGBTIQ+ community in a relaxed environment and presented a special opportunity for the community to connect in an inclusive environment.
The Tritons, who are one of the only clubs in Queensland who do an adult intake for beginners are looking to expand into a ladies team for the summer competition. They are currently midway through their beginners' boot camp.
