QUEENSLAND COUNTRY WATER POLO TO MAKE SPLASH AT MACKAY ARC

This weekend, the Mackay Region will host to the 2020 Agonswim Australia Water Polo Queensland Country Championships from 14 – 16 February at the new, state-of-the art, FINA accredited Mackay Aquatic and Recreation Complex (ARC).  
 
A total of eleven (11) male and female open-aged teams, managers, coaches and officials representing seven regional centres across Queensland and totalling approximately 200 people will descend on Mackay for this three (3) day event. These players will showcase the best country water polo players, coaches and referees in Queensland as they vie for the title of champion region and place in the Queensland Teams to participate in the National Country Water Polo Championships to be held on the Gold Coast in early May.  
 
Water Polo Queensland Chief Executive Officer, Melanie Woosnam, said: “We are excited to be hosting the 2020 Agonswim Australia Water Polo Queensland Country Championships at the Mackay Aquatic & Recreation Complex which is a FINA accredited facility. Mackay Regional Council have been supportive in installing additional fixtures at the pool to allows us to accommodate two (2) fields of play, which along with the state of the art ancilliary facilities, will make the venue even more attractive and capable of hosting local, regional, state and national level water polo competitions and events in the future”. 

“Water Polo Queensland are also very fortunate to have secured an events naming rights partner in swimwear specialists, Agonswim Australia. Owner of Agonswim Australia, Christine Fınlay helped re-establish water polo in Cairns and has an acute understanding and appreciation of the importance of providing quality water polo events and opportunities for people from the country regions”. 
 

“Finally, we would like to acknowlege the wonderful event funding support provided by Mackay Regional Council through the Invest Mackay Events Attraction Program. This funding certainly makes it easier to take state level events such as these into regional areas ofQueensland and provides wonderful social and economic benefits to these rural communities”. 
 
Mayor Greg Williamson said council was proud to support the Water Polo Queensland Country Championships through our Invest Mackay Events Attraction Program.  “The championships provide local athletes with an opportunity to develop their skills by competing against top-tier competition for selection in the Queensland Country representative team,” Mayor Greg Williamson said.   “Those selected, will go on to compete at the Australian Country Championships later this year. “With a state-of-the-art facility like Mackay Aquatic and Recreation Complex right on our doorstep, Mackay is the perfect location for state, national and international competitions like this. “This event also provides a number of economic benefits to our region, generating an estimated $600,000 in economic output and attracting more than 600 visitors to our region.”  
 
Come along to the Mackay ARC from 10am on Friday 14th February to see all teams in action for Day 1 of the 2020 Agonswim Australia Water Polo Queensland Country Championships. The action concludes on Sunday 16th February with the ladies final commencing at 12pm and the men’s final at 1pm with medal presentations commencing directly following at 2pm. 
 
The draw, team information and event program for the 2020 Agonswim Australia Water Polo Queensland Country Championships can be found on the Water Polo Queensland website at  www.waterpoloqld.com.au.  
 
A final official media event will be held the day prior to the Championships for all local media to attend. Local Mackay athletes participating in the event will be in the water for a photo opportunity. The CEO from Water Polo Qld and President of Mackay Water Polo as well as Council Staff will also be in attendance for interviews and questions.
