VALE | Wade Greig

Published Mon 08 Oct 2018

Wade played for Queensland throughout the 1960s and 70s and is father to Natalie Greig, who also represented Queensland in the 1980s. There are many fond memories of Wade, both in and out of the water, none more so than from Marty Davis, who coached Wade in the 70s.

Wade was the oldest player on our team, pushing 40. His teammates, for the most part, were young, inexperienced and timid. Wade added the much-needed grit and a willingness to throw the first elbow or punch for a squad that hadn’t won a game in over a year. Although he prided himself on his fitness, he had by far the worst legs in the history of the sport, using a bastardized version of the egg beater that barely got his chin out of the water. But he was a tough competitor, an offensive threat with a quick shot and a feisty defender. We won the grand title that year, with contributions from the kids, a few imports and “the old man”. He was an essential member of the team.

Always well-groomed and nattily dressed, Wade was the perfect foil to our goalie, Lon Regehr “the big man” who thought it normal to shop for groceries wearing nothing but a speedo.

Out of the pool, Wade would light up when pointing out or watching his girls. For a tough guy, he doted on them, flashing what we all remember best, that beaming gap-toothed smile.

Family and Friends are invited to attend a Celebration of Wade’s Life to be held at St Joseph’s Nudgee College Chapel, 2199 Sandgate Road, Boondall on Tuesday, 9th October 2018 at 10:30am
